This standard file format is supported by several financial software and the file is compatible to be imported from one tax preparation application to another. TXT-supported software include Turbo Tax, H&R Block and Microsoft Money. A PDF file must first be converted into a CSV file before it can be converted into a TXF file.
CSV File
CSV stands for Comma Separated Values. A CSV extension file compresses large amounts of tabular data and saves it in a plain-text format separated by commas. This helps retain all essential information and also reduce the file size. CSV format files are commonly used to save data arranged in spreadsheets and databases.
Converting PDF to CSV
Adobe Acrobat Professional has an 'Export' function that allows a PDF file to be converted into several other formats, including CSV. TXF Express (txf-express.com/products.html) is among the more well-known conversion applications used by financial firms and business professionals to convert CSV files into TXF format. Alternatively, 1099-B Importer (1099bimporter.com/) is a free conversion application that users can download and install on their computers. You can also convert CSV to TXF format via a website. Rod Wishant, a computer software architect, created a free-to-use online app that converts a CSV file into a TXF file (rodwhisnant.com/txf/).
Conversion Errors
Typically, financial documents hold significant amounts of important data. Also, financial data is displayed in complex tables and may contain unique details such as decimal points, currency symbols, formulas and mathematical signs. While applications can convert the file from one format to other, not all applications have a 100 percent track record in translating the details that appear in one format file into another. Before translation, carefully proofread the document, especially when the PDF is first being translated into a plain-text CSV file before being converted into a TXF file.
